Theater Works is an after school performing arts enrichment class offered to students from Kindergarten through 8th grade. The mission of the class is to expose students to all performing arts disciplines and to teach participants how to work together as a team.
The Theater Works concept was developed by entertainment industry professional and St. Cyril mother, Palmer Davis. “Creating a supportive environment and instilling a strong work ethic is essential for the developing the student-artist,” says Palmer. “The skills learned in the performing arts can be applied to daily academic life and later in one’s professional life.”
Kindergarten – Grade 2: Following directions through games, basic dance and vocal warm up (including stretching and dance vocabulary), vocal projection, spontaneous story-telling and improvisation, coordination and acting games, choreography and songs. First and second graders will perform scripted monologues as a Spring semester project.
Boys Grade 1 - 2: Same curriculum as above but designed specifically for the attention span, energy and focus of boys. Sports and action themes are integrated into the theatrical curriculum making the boys feel like boys as they learn how to dance, sing and act.
Grades 3 - 8: Vocal dance warm up, progressions across the floor (dance movement with specific spatial awareness, vocabulary and timing). Choreography, scene work, vocal projection, theatre games, singing games, performance technique, and stage skills.
A Note from Palmer Davis:
“Since 2004, teaching children has been a passion of mine. I am committed to providing a safe place where children are free to learn, play and experiment with the arts. As a competitive athlete and professional dancer I have learned the importance of being a good team player and bringing positive energy to the group. I treat all children as young professionals, capable of being respectful, caring and positively energetic. I firmly believe that these skills if applied to their daily life will help them become successful in anything they choose to pursue.”
